Maintenance module Free feature

Maintenance mode

Shows a configurable notice to everyone except administrators while you work, returning a proper 503 so search engines treat it as temporary.

What it does

A holding page that talks to crawlers correctly

Maintenance mode is a Vectro maintenance feature that shows a configurable notice to visitors who are not administrators while returning HTTP 503 with a Retry-After header, so search engines treat the downtime as temporary.

Turn this on and everyone except administrators sees a simple notice with a heading, description and estimated time you write. Administrators continue to see the live site normally, so you can work on it while visitors see the holding page. Logged-in editors, authors and subscribers see the notice too.

The part that separates this from most maintenance mode plugins is the HTTP status. Vectro returns 503 Service Unavailable with a Retry-After header, rather than a normal 200 response containing maintenance text.

That distinction sounds pedantic and is not. It is the difference between a search engine understanding you are briefly down and a search engine indexing your holding page as your actual content.

The Maintenance module is off by default on a new install. Switch it on from the Vectro dashboard before this feature can run.

Why it matters

A 200 response on a maintenance page is an SEO problem

When a crawler requests a page and receives 200 OK, it takes the response at face value: this is the content at this URL. If that content is “we will be back shortly”, that is what gets indexed and what appears in search results. Do it across a whole site for a day and the damage takes far longer than a day to undo.

A 503 with Retry-After says something entirely different: the server is temporarily unavailable, do not index this, come back later. Crawlers respect it and retain what they already had.

Returns 503, not 200
Search engines treat the downtime as temporary rather than indexing your holding page as content.
Retry-After header
Tells crawlers when to come back instead of leaving them to guess.
Administrators see the live site
Anyone who can manage options works normally while everyone else sees the notice.
Your own message
Write what visitors see rather than shipping a generic default.

How to use it

Write the message, then switch it on

1
Switch on the Maintenance module
Go to Vectro > Dashboard in wp-admin and turn on the Maintenance module toggle. It is off by default on a new install.
2
Open the Maintenance module
Go to Vectro > Maintenance in wp-admin.
3
Write your message first
Fill in Page Heading, Description and Estimated Time before enabling. Empty fields fall back to defaults such as “Back shortly.” Say roughly when you expect to be back.
4
Toggle Enable Maintenance Mode on
Click Save Maintenance Settings. Everyone except administrators immediately receives the notice with a 503 status.
5
Verify in a private window
Load the site logged out to confirm the notice appears and that you still see the live site in your normal session.
6
Turn it off when you finish
This is the step that gets forgotten. Leaving 503 in place for days will cost you search visibility.

Technical detail

What the response looks like

Vectro intercepts front-end requests on template_redirect and, unless the visitor is an administrator, returns a 503 Service Unavailable response carrying your notice, along with a Retry-After header of one hour. Administrators, WP-CLI and WP-Cron are excluded, and wp-admin itself is never blocked, so the site remains fully usable for you.

Because the check happens before the theme’s templates load, the holding page does not use your theme’s templates. That makes it usable while you are actively changing or debugging the theme itself.

HTTP status
503 Service Unavailable
Header
Retry-After, so crawlers know to return later.
Who sees it
Every front-end visitor who is not an administrator, including logged-in editors, authors and subscribers.
Who does not
Administrators, WP-CLI and WP-Cron requests. wp-admin itself is never blocked.
Theme dependency
None. The page does not use your theme’s templates.
Message
Heading, description, estimated time and an optional progress bar, set in Vectro > Maintenance.
On deactivation
Maintenance mode is switched off.

Questions

Frequently asked

What does WordPress maintenance mode do in Vectro?

Vectro maintenance mode shows a configurable notice to everyone except administrators while returning HTTP 503 with a Retry-After header. Administrators continue to see the live site normally so you can keep working.

Does Vectro maintenance mode work with other maintenance plugins?

Vectro runs its maintenance mode regardless of other plugins active, because no conflicts are detected for this feature. Avoid enabling two maintenance mode plugins at once, since whichever intercepts the request first will decide what visitors see.

How do I enable maintenance mode in Vectro?

Switch on the Maintenance module under Vectro > Dashboard, then go to Vectro > Maintenance, write your notice text first and toggle Enable Maintenance Mode on. Check the site in a private window afterwards to confirm visitors see the notice.

Is Vectro maintenance mode free or Pro?

Yes, Vectro maintenance mode is free. It is included in the free Vectro plugin on WordPress.org with no account required.

Does maintenance mode hurt my WordPress SEO?

It does not if the response returns HTTP 503, which tells search engines the downtime is temporary and that they should not index the holding page. Vectro returns 503 with a Retry-After header rather than a normal 200 response, but you should still turn maintenance mode off as soon as you finish.
